Fall - Rhythmic & Developmental Movement

Movement patterns learned by infants serve as building blocks for more complex movements that we use in our recreational and daily activities. Aging, stress and trauma can adversely affect these patterns and result in reduced strength and coordination, increased strain on the nervous system, and the reliance on bracing and compensation to get us through our day. By re-learning these building blocks we can reset our movement patterns and re-train our body to move as a connected and integrated whole.

In this workshop, you will learn easy rhythmic and developmental movements that improve the mind-body connection and support the nervous system. Enjoy the benefits of improved coordination, mental focus and structural organization, and experience how simple exercises can provide a solid foundation for your overall well-being.

Exploring the Yamas & Niyamas

Many of us have experienced the “ripple effect” of yoga – in the hours and days after we practice, we often notice subtle shifts in other aspects of our lives.  These effects demonstrate the very real connection of our body, mind and spirit, and how our practice finds its way through our bodies, and into our relationships with ourselves, with others and with the world.

In the ancient yoga tradition, this practice of yoga “beyond the mat” was considered more important than the physical postures that have come to define yoga in the present day.  The Yamas & Niyamas are Sanskrit words that translate as “restraints” and “observances” described in the yoga as ethical guidelines.  These are not strict rules, but are life-sustaining practices that lead us to thrive and end suffering.  They are not connected with any specific religion, but actually fit beautifully within any religion or belief system.

In this workshop, you will learn more about each of these guidelines and explore how they can be practiced in your everyday life to help you life more skillfully and joyfully.  You will be invited to take part in some experiential activities and to share your thoughts and questions in discussions about the practices.

Date: Sunday, February 25
Time: 1:00-5:00 PM
Teacher: Joanne Hudspith
Fee: $100.00 CAD + HST
